In terms of the Construction Regulations of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Act 85 of 1993, "construction work" means any work that comprise the following:

• Any type of building, maintenance, renovation or demolition to a building or similar structure
• The installation / erection, maintenance or dismantling of a fixed plant where there would be a risk of a person falling
• Any type of construction or maintenance of / on civil engineering structures, such as dams, bridges, canals, roads, railways, runways, sewers or water reticulation systems
• Any type of work that involves:
• Moving of earth
• Clearing of land
• Excavations
• Piling
• Work of a similar nature to the above
